Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “önemsiz sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine demetlanmasıyla oluşan kısaca polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız sözıntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok adetda polipeptit alt birimi barındırır). Baş ayrım peptitlerin kısaca, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, gayrı amino asite daim, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle demetlanır. Polipeptid bünyesına sulplan amino asitlerin her biri bünyeya peptid demetlarıyla demetlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, ortalama 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sulplan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, azade amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin gayrı ucundaki azade α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
